WTN in India, Tamil Nadu, School Aid

During 1999 we started supporting a school in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu, India.

The school was founded by the head teacher and his wife, Mr and Mrs Samy, through the sale of their own house. They wanted to start a school based on their own christian principles.

When we arrived on a visit in April 1999 they gave a us a long list of jobs which needed to be done. We sent £1,000 ($1,600) to have the roof repaired.

During the monsoon rain the roof was in such a bad state that water would pour through and disrupt classes. We felt that this was a priority.

Once that was complete we were able to send £400 ($640) to have brick dividing walls built to separate each of the classes. Previously there had only been rush matting dividers and this had not helped the children maintain concentration during lessons, as noise quickly travelled the length of the school room.

The school has now asked us for a new bus. Many of the children live in outlying villages and the only way they could get to the school is by the bus. With about a third of the children unable to pay the very modest school fees, they would not be able to afford local transport. The cost for a new(ish) bus is in the region of £9,000 ($15,000) which we are unable to do at this time.

If you feel you can help the school please let us know.
